Silicon Valley, USA. Voice access to the Internet: the challenge for emerging countries

#EoF: the Stories - Technology can also break down the barriers of illiteracy: the project of Sumang Liu, entrepreneur in the field of new technologies

Sumang Liu is an entrepreneur in the field of new technologies. Born and raised in China, today he lives in the United States, in San Francisco, Silicon Valley. An important travel destination for active and aspiring entrepreneurs, but also for the simply curious, Silicon Valley is today the most innovative district in the world, one of the most important poles of technological investment where dozens of companies and thousands of start-ups have their main headquarters. "I am the head of a team working to develop voice technology for level 2 languages in emerging markets (e.g. India, Africa, South East Asia and the Middle East). Although we have cutting-edge technology and the support of major venture capitalists - US, Japanese and Chinese ones - technology is not the only factor in "success" today. To improve accessibility to information, it is important to include and involve and engage the 3.5 billion people in emerging markets. A very large part of the world's population speaks local languages and idioms. Because of illiteracy and difficulties in accessing education and other socio-economic problems, "voice" is becoming one of the main means of access to the Internet".

Analysts agree that voice recognition systems, that is, those that are able to recognise spoken words to use them in various applications, have made considerable progress thanks to the introduction of artificial intelligence technologies. However - Liu continues - voice technology for "secondary" languages is poorly developed and not quite accurate. In Mosaix, innovation makes information and services easily accessible even if they are oral and it allows for more and more people to easily access the internet economy and therefore the digital economy, where there is a constant exchange of information and data through the use of new technologies.

"Accessibility to information is the key to modern social equity and sustainability. It facilitates better education, awareness and collaboration. We have already launched voice-enabled TVs and phones in 21 emerging market countries and have observed that users interact with online content much more frequently and efficiently”. The Dynamic Language artificial intelligence platform enables customers to create intelligent voice assistants for fast and accurate responses in a wide range of languages. The goal is to replace complicated text-based searches with a voice based search interface. Mosaix is developed by a group of talented researchers and engineers from Google, Apple Maps and Cisco IoT and brings together Natural Language Processing (NLP), graphics, research, robotics, semantics, and machine learning. Liu also participates in the Economy of Francesco: "I hope to have the opportunity to discuss ideas, exchange views and explore synergies with other young leaders, especially those from emerging markets".
