On Monday 16 December, third edition of the event ‘EcoGive - Let's give a network to the environment’ a project for education and promotion of environmental sustainability and international solidarity. Live streaming from 11.15 a.m. CET
The appointment is at the Aula Magna of La Sapienza University of Rome, from 9.30 to 12.30.
A sustainable world for all. This is what 650 students from secondary schools in Rome and Lazio are committed to, together with many of their peers, who will animate the Aula Magna of La Sapienza on the morning of next Monday 16 December. It will be a moment of awareness, celebration and promotion - with artistic performances, reflections and technical insights by some professors of Sapienza University - scientific partner of the EcoGive project some of whom have already registered in the App, which involves thousands of girls and boys in 9 countries on all continents on the theme of energy saving.
This ‘party for the Earth’ will open up to the whole world in the streaming video transmission, starting at 11.15 a.m CET., with translation into four languages during which the free App will be presented that extends the initiative to everyone, young and old. You can access the streaming directly by clicking on the cover image of this post.
EcoGive is an international project and an App for environmental sustainability and solidarity; an educational path and a concrete action for energy saving and the correct use of resources that relieves communities wounded by climate change. Schools and organisations from 8 countries other than Italy will participate. The scientific focus of this third edition will be:
Water and energy: our responsibility to respect the Earth
Professors from the Sapienza University's Department of Earth Sciences will shed light on the virtuous processes that can reverse the current planetary ecological crisis. They will also reflect on the growing phenomenon known as ‘eco-anxiety’ that is spreading among young people.
From Valencia, chastened by the historic, massive and tragic flood of 29 October, a group of young people involved in the United World Project will share their experience of volunteering and shared solidarity in a geography devastated by the extreme weather phenomenon known as DANA (Spanish acronym for ‘Isolated Depression in High Levels’).
Riccardo and Serena, from the ‘James Joyce’ high school in Ariccia and the ‘Giovanni Keplero’ high school in Rome, members of the student team that coordinated and will present the programme, explain:
The question we started with was: but what do we want to say to the world? That we want to do something to make an impact in society for the preservation of our Planet. We asked ourselves about our responsibility towards the resources we have available to us every day. Each of us can make small, everyday changes that can bring about decisive change.
Contributions were also made by Max Paiella in the audience, actor, comedian, singer-songwriter, imitator, a well-known name on the Rai Radio 2 programme ‘The Rabbit Roar’, and by Andrea Cavina, classical guitarist, and other young artists, all sensitive to the issue of environmental sustainability.
In order to educate the girls and boys to develop a greater awareness and do their part concretely, the project proposes the EcoGive App, promoted by Problem Solving Srl and developed by Innovation Lab Srl, enthusiastically welcomed by the boys, which records and collects the environmental saving acts of the participating classes. During the event, its operation will be explained, also to spread it to as many people as possible.
Each class (but also groups of friends, colleagues or relatives) identifies a solidarity project for environmental protection and poverty alleviation. For example, helping to establish forest cover and produce fruit in Haiti, recovering and protecting the drinking water network in Burundi from pollution, or fostering agri-food processing and conservation in Benin.
In order to achieve these results, boys and girls carry out ‘energy-saving acts’ - Ecogive videos whose magnitude in terms of CO2, kWh or water saved has been calculated by the Sapienza researchers - which they record on the App and which, monetised, are transformed into small rewards from their sponsors (parents, grandparents, uncles...). The funds collected contribute to the realisation of the objectives.
The project has already reached about 15,000 students in Italy and around the world who have joined the Energy Saving Pact and is growing internationally. In addition to Italy, schools and organisations from eight other countries are participating: Burundi, Benin, South Africa, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Haiti and the Philippines.
EcoGive, born in Palermo on the initiative of a chemistry teacher, Elena Pace, is implemented by the New Ways for a United World APS Association in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Merit's RiGenerazione Scuola plan, the Department of Earth Sciences of Rome's Sapienza University, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Waste Cycle of Roma Capitale and the Municipality of Rome II.
The initiative also benefits from the patronage of: Lazio Region, Italian Space Agency, Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development, Earth Day Italy, EcoOne, United World Project and Symbola Foundation.
It is inspired by the United Nations 2030 Agenda Goals, focusing in particular on Goal 13 (combating climate change), Goal 4 (promoting quality education) and Goal 2 (eradicating hunger). image Download the Flyer (1.70 MB)
