A quick and sudden illness took away Markèta Sedláčková, wife of economist Tomás Sedlácek, a friend of the EoC, in just 6 days
It was through heart-wrenching words that Czech economist Tomás Sedlácek announced the death of his beloved wife Markèta in an email to his friends. She died at the age of 43 in a terrible and sudden illness. He expresses an immense gratitude for what she has been for his academic career as an economist and what she meant for him through all his life. Markèta was a sociologist with various PhDs (including one she took from SciencePo in Paris) and taught in the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University in Prague.
"Professor Sedláčková not only had a great capacity in her field, but above all she was a person who was able to bring an enormous amount of positive energy into everyday academic life", her students wrote, in dismay. In addition to her activities at the Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy, Charles University, Marketa also worked at the Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Sciences, specializing in trust, social capital and democracy and recently in the research of depression as a social phenomenon. “The news of her death struck his family, colleagues and students, among whom she was very popular, like a lightning bolt out of the blue," an online newspaper from the Czech Republic reported today..
We want to express to Tomáš Sedláček, who is a great friend of the Economy of Communion, our sympathy and affection for the terrible loss he and his son Kryštof have suffered. We would like to remember the beautiful dialogue he conducted with Luigino Bruni that took place on 26 August 2015, on the occasion and exactly during the days of the EoC Summer School in Prague. A video recording of it is preserved and can be found on the EoC website.
