From April 25-27, 2025, the town of Puerto Nuevo (Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador) will host the First Congress on the Economy of Communion and Popular Solidarity Economy. This event will bring together approximately 50 young people, national and international special guests, and the team from the “Sunrise – Giovani imprenditori e difensori dell’ambiente 2. ("Sunrise - Young Entrepreneurs and Environmental Defenders" project.)
This Congress is held within the framework of the Sunrise project, promoted by AMU – Azione per un Mondo Unito and “Obra de Maria – Ecuador”,
with the support of EoC France and Economy of Communion International. The initiative was born in response to the situation of social and economic vulnerability experienced by the communities of the canton of Muisne, in the province of Esmeraldas, which primarily affects young people. Since its inception, Sunrise has promoted youth participation in local economic development and the building of a culture of peace, solidarity, and environmental stewardship.
The Congress will address topics that invite reflection on the meaning of work, the values that can guide economic activity with social impact, and the advantages of entrepreneurship based on models such as the Economy of Communion (EoC) and the Popular and Solidarity Economy, so deeply rooted in Ecuadorian culture.
Highlights of the program include practical experiences and inspiring testimonies, such as the workshop by Panamanian volunteer and entrepreneur Jesús Peterson, the dialogue with economists David and Kari Jaramillo on the challenges and opportunities of the EoC, and the workshop by Ecuadorian entrepreneur José Quintero, who will demonstrate how to integrate care for environment into business management.
In addition to theoretical contributions, the Congress proposes a dynamic methodology based on open dialogues, games, and questions and answers, creating a space for participatory and experiential learning.
This event will not only strengthen the capacities of the participating youths but will also contribute to the Sunrise project's central objective: for new generations to become protagonists of sustainable, humane, and supportive development, capable of generating meaningful entrepreneurship, caring for the environment, and building a more just and resilient community.
An opportunity to rethink the economy from the heart of Ecuadorian youth!
