Organisations, CSR and Social Development. The Experience of the EoC Companies

Undergraduate degree in Economics: Banks, Businesses and Markets

University of Macerata, 20 October 2015, Language: Italian, Advisor: Federico Niccolini

The pursuit of profit can be combined with the resolution of social problems, as demonstrated by the analysis of the companies involved in the EoC project that are an example of how organizations can create wealth not only for themselves but also for society. However, a cultural change is needed, not only as regards the role of business but also its own identity. The EoC companies show that the way to contribute to social, economic and environmental welfare is actually viable.

An Analysis of Client Satisfaction in the Moyi Mwa Ntongo EoC Centre for Medical Analysis (CMMMN) in Kinshasa

Master in Company Management

Kinshasa Business  School (Democratic Republic of the Congo), 6 June 2015, Language: French, Advisor: Annie Cornet

Mission, Governance and Competitive Advantage of a Business with a Social Orientation: the Project of the Economy of Communion

Undergraduate degree in Economy and Company Management

University of Catania, 2 March 2015, Language: Italian, Advisor: Rosario Faraci

The thesis analyses a socially-oriented business strategy, linked to the experience of the EoC's Lionello Bonfanti Business Park which sees the company as a fundamental tool for a more civil and ethical society. Mission, governance and competitive advantage are based on the centrality of man and the relationships inside and outside the company, the strategic importance of the welfare of the client who is the user of the product, on respecting the environment and paying attention to those who are in difficulty.

Master's Degree in Marketing and Corporate Communication

The word of mouth about good deeds and reciprocity of the EoC activates dynamics of appetite for the common good. Encouraged to achieve personal growth at work, people are satisfied and involved in their profession with concrete benefit for the company, triggering processes of mutual aid. For the project to grow, however, the developed of measurement tools of relational dynamics is necessary, just as an adequate and flexible interdisciplinary terminology and a greater publicity and dissemination of this new way of doing economics.

Economy of Communion: a Niche Experience or Potential of Diffusion? An Analysis from the Perspective of Agape.

Doctoral Degree in Religious Studies

Pontifical University  of Sao Paulo (Brazil) , 1 August 2014, Language: Portuguese, Advisor: Enio da Costa Brito

The thesis which takes Niklas Luhmann's social systems theory as theoretical reference shows that if the unconditional love of agape is introduced into the economic system through the EoC as a principle capable of directing the actions of individuals in society, it causes a break in the current economic logic, giving rise to what is called "rationality of communion".

Happiness in Mexico: an Application of the System of Equations with No Apparent Correlation

Bachelor's Degree in Applied Statistics in the Insurance and Finances Sector

Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), 25 June 2014, Language: Spanish, Advisor:: Juan José Fernández Durán

The thesis, in search of sustainable development and a guideline for public policies, wonders what factors determine the happiness of a Mexican person. Among the possible variables the EoC's culture of giving is also taken into account. After an analysis based on the latest studies for the measurement of happiness, the thesis shows that, even if the environment contributes to the level of happiness, inner growth and personal characteristics are the determining factors of happiness, confirming a fully human vision of underlying happiness attributed to the EoC.

Economy of Communion: Theory and Practice

Master in Business Administration

Seoul National University of Science and Technology, 28 March 2013, language: Korean, Advisor: Kim, Sam-soo

The EoC is capable of surpassing the principle of competition in the capitalist market economy and achieving brotherhood in economics. Although practised by only a few companies and with a short history, the EoC shows that it is possible to restore individual relationships and trust in the market, too. The real value of the EoC is in placing people at the centre in all production processes. The EoC promotes brotherhood through social and economic activities, and practises the culture of giving in a society wounded by marginalization and suspicion.

CSV and EoC: models for a sustainable development

Specialist Degree in International Business

University of Bergamo, 30 October 2012, Language: Italian, Advisor: Gianpaolo Baronchelli

The models of "Creating Shared Value" and "Economy of Communion" solve social issues by inviting for collaboration and the enhancement of the community context. It is a very effective approach in the emerging realities where the proactive action of the western enterprise is employed for the development of the country in which it wants to settle, respecting its culture and values.  The thesis concludes with the case of a company that intends to enter the Indian market: considering the values and also the barriers this entry, it outlines an approach mode as shown in CSV and EoC.

A Study of a Social Teaching Plan as an Alternative to Economic Neoliberalism with Focus on the Economy of Communion

PhD in the Social Teaching of the Church

Suwon Catholic University by Gyeonggi-do, South Korea 7 September 2009, language: Korean, Advisor: Lee, Seong-hyo

Why is it that the gap between the rich and the poor seems to increase more and more in the world? What is generating this trend? The answer is in the prevalence of the neoliberal economy and the maximization of profits at any cost that results from it. Founded on the culture of giving, the Economy of Communion is about helping those in need out of poverty and can be an alternative to neo-liberalism that is based on capital and competition. Despite the difficulties in spreading the "Policy of communion" in the Korean reality, it has been found that in the companies operated with these standards, results were not slow in coming.

Marketing in the Economy of Communion. New Moral and Spiritual Challenges

Undergraduate degree in Business Economy

University of Bergamo, 27th February 2013, Language: Italian, Advisor: Alberto Marino

Is it realistic for EoC companies to think of a type of marketing that does not merely point to the company's profit, but promotes actions in favour of the most deprived people from a perspective of fraternal communion? The key issue is the "transition from positional goods to relational goods", which manifests itself in a lifestyle that involves employees, stakeholders and the "hidden partner": here the poverty-stricken people become the "promoters" of motivation to all corporate entities, in a reciprocity based view. The thesis describes the main types of marketing with social orientation that are applicable to the EoC corporate world, highlighting the need to adopt strategies to increase profits, however, through very specific ethical forms and spiritual values.

ECONOMIC@MIND: Behavioural Finance Between Interest and Relationality

Master's degree in Psychology

European University of Rome, 7th March 2014, Language: Italian, Advisor: Paolo Sorbi

The initial intention of the thesis was to analyze the current anthropological and moral crisis that causes a deep sense of being lost on both the individual and collective levels and consequently, the making of irrational choices. It seems now obvious that this great crisis will not be overcome until talking about the "good" of man is not re-started: "gift", "gratuitousness" and "communion" are words that may be considered old, but they must be called back into play and return to be part of our economy. They serve the creation of "another" type of economy where the roads of coexistence between profit and the economy of the gift are set forth, which is to be undertaken with a strong sense of relatedness.

The Principle of Reciprocity in the Economy

Undergraduate degree in Political Sciences

University of Milano, 13th December 2013, Language: Italian, Advisor: Franco Donzelli

The thesis aimed to examine how acting according to the logic of reciprocity moves some economic agents to adopt novel solutions and practices, considering the essential reaction of the people with whom they relate. A further intention of this paper is to show the different goals and causes that make these economic agents consider these necessary reactions. After considering the economic theories that define the principle of reciprocity as essential to the happiness of the people, the main objectives encouraging economic agents to act according to this principle were analyzed. Finally, some examples of application we presented: Corporate Social Responsibility, the Economy of Communion, the cooperative and the micro-credit.

Gift and Reciprocity: Company Experiences and Theoretical Reflections

Master's degree in Economics and Tourism Management

“Alma Mater Studiorum” University of Bologna, 16th July 2013, Language: Italian, Advisor: Maria Gabriella Baldarelli

The thesis aimed to analyze companies that work for the common good (through gift and the quality of relational goods) within Civil Economy and the EoC. These paradigms have been applied to the company experience of Ridix Inc. of Turin through the MGA model: Mission, Governance and Accountability. Two questionnaires were distributed and completed inside the company: one directed at the management and one for employees. Interviews with senior management, financial statements from 2009 to 2012 and the balance sheet ratios were also covered by the analysis. The research has shown that from the perspective of reciprocity and gift, the examined management control represents a modus operandi that focuses on the person. This allows us to respond to situations of uncertainty through the values of generosity (gratuitousness), trust, transparency and relatedness.

The Economy of Communion Project in the City of Igarassú, (Pernambuco): a study of acting with social responsibility and the relationship of companies with the administrative support

Undergraduate degree in Accounting

De Pernambuco Federal University Recife (PE, Brazil), 27th March 2013, Language: Portuguese, Advisor: Christianne Calado

The thesis aimed to analyze the social responsibility of the three EdC small enterprises in the city of Igarassú-Pe, to see if they were had the requirements for publishing their Social Report. After collecting data through interviews with the owners, it was verified that the companies examined are socially responsible, because they invest in the further-training of their employees, help the community in which they operate and are concerned about preserving the environment; furthermore, they are in possession of the information needed to compile the Social Report. It is therefore concluded that, if they decide, they may develop a Social Report in line with the model suggested by IBASE for small and micro enterprises.

How to Convey the EoC Principles in the Company? The Mundell & Associates Case: Working with the Organisational Diagram and Internal Relations in the Company

Graduate degree in Managerial Sciences

Australian University, Buenos Aires (Argentina), 19th November 2013, Language: Spanish, Advisor: Juan Francisco Daraio

The thesis is the product of an internship at the EoC company Mundell & Associates. The idea is: "How to pass the EoC ball?"; a simple question that tries to give an answer to one of the biggest challenges that companies driven by idealistic motivations such as the EoC have to face: the transmission and spread of these ideals by the leader / founder to the other members. It is exactly for the fact of being an "ideal" that it cannot be inserted in a contract but it remains a free choice and an act of generosity. The thesis focused on this question while examining the framework of Mundell & Associates to show how it can be expressed in the company organisational diagram, finally proposing some ideas that may facilitate this transmission.

Economy and Human Development in Antonio Genovesi and Amartya Sen

Master's degree in European Political Sciences and Development Strategies

University of Naples "Frederick II", 19th December 2013, Language: Italian, Advisor: Marco Musella

The thesis analyzes the tradition of Civil Economy of Neapolitan economist Antonio Genovesi, comparing it with the important theory of the Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen. Both contributions are essential inasmuch as they place cultural and economic reciprocity and the well-being of individuals at the centre of the debate and intend to "reform" the dominant capitalist and individualist model that is going through a crisis now. Within the same topicality, professors Zamagni, Gui and Bruni were also interviewed about the proposals of Civil Economy and about doing business today. Civil is not a "new" adjective to be set aside for the identification of a specific sector, but to be understood as the key to a broader and more unified understanding, a cultural perspective from which the whole of economy can be interpreted. It is a style that you can practice in businesses, organizations of civil society, thereby making relatedness the reason for existence. And the EoC is a concrete example of this.

Combining Gratuity and Efficiency: Restoring Human Health

Undergraduate degree in Economics and Health Services Management

Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, 27th November 2011, language: Italian, Advisor: Alessandra Smerilli

The aim of the thesis was to ask how to combine the stay in the market of companies that deal with health and making health care accessible to those who cannot afford it. In what way is it possible to combine efficiency and freely given services? Could the Economy of Communion be the answer to these questions by introducing a different logic in the market? Based on the analysis of three cases of companies that operate in the area of health care in different geographical locations, there emerges a common focus on bringing the person to the centre of health services. In professions that are "relation-sensitive" such as those in curing, that "something more" to which EoC businesses point given their deep intrinsic motivation can really make a difference.
