The Latin-American School for the Economy of Communion (EoC) in the Mariapolis Center  of Igarissu, in the metropolitan area of Recife, started yesterday, July 12th. The 200 participants, arriving in the state of Pernumbuco, were greeted warmly in the opening ceremony, filled with musical and socio-cultural references.

The first part of the day was introduced by Luigino Bruni, together with other Brazilian EoC leaders; Bruni, who is the principal theoretician of the Economy of Communion, briefly described the history of the project and presented his perspectives for the future: the Economy of Communion, he explained, is not merely a concept, but a continuous process which is built on relationships.

The economist underlined the key role that young people must take on in this new economic model in the next few years, in particular with the new emerging businesses. “Today we have many business people in the spirit of the EoC, but few businesses.  There is a ‘new wine’ awaiting ‘new skins’,  he said, explaining that the seed, DNA of the EoC, was formed in the last 20 years, but now is the moment to help it grow into a tree.

For this to happen, Prof. Bruni has identified some key passages.  Before all, we need to majorly promote the productive inclusion of the poor, that is, not just to alleviate their indigent state through donations, which is however a fundamental aspect of the project, but to integrate them in the productive process.  This is because work is fundamental for the development of human dignity and for rising above asymmetrical relations.

In the second place, according to Prof. Brunian explosive creativity is necessary, brought on especially by the young people so that new businesses may arise, capable of responding effectively to social needs and to build an economic model based on communion, reciprocity and freedom.  Lastly, the economist underlined the importance of creating synergy with all the other actors of civil society and the market, who will work towards the establishment of a new economy.

It was important for me today to have a general idea of the EoC, to share thoughts and questions. I could sense real communion and solidarity which are essential for the EoC, in keeping with the principles of reciprocity” said a young man, Manoel Carvalho Contijo dos Santos, of Salvador (capital of the state of Bahia) at the end of the first day of school.

Luigino Bruni concluded proposing that schools such as these take place every year, in different places, and the participants showed their approval with a sustained applause.

In the next few days, apart from the moments when Luigino Bruni and the entrepreneurs of the EoC are in plenary session, there will be numerous workshops held, on seven principal themes: the spiritualization of businesses; quality and certification; tools to pass from a culture of dependency to one of reciprocity, inside and outside the business: the transformation of businesses; of entrepreneurs and workers:  a new model of development; alternative production systems and social innovation: a reflection from the point of view of the EoC; the work of an EoC researcher; the courage to be a business owner.  Updatings from the school of Igarassu on these pages!
